Sunday, January 16. 2005Wow.Thursday, January 6. 2005A Suggestion To Open Source Companies
Its clearly evident how hell-bent the entertainment industry is on conquering the digital realm one way or another. The first way that comes to anyones mind is through brute force. RIAA’s and also now the MPAA’s actions epitomize the term ‘brute force’. But as we wade further and further into the battle and find out more and more that brute force just won’t work, we must assume that the industry also realizes this. This is something that is evident in their other attempt to conquer the digital realm. DRM is now a hot area. It is my opinion, personally, that most consumers do not like DRM. Its obtrusive, annoying, and most of all restrictive. But DRM isn’t only confined to ‘thwarting’ would-be file sharers. We are coming onto an era where streaming video is a viable way to distribute entertainment. The industry knows this and is working fast to take advantage of it. And along side them holding their hand is Microsoft. They have been working hard for the past few years to make the digital realm a place fertile for entertainment companies. Just take a look at their Trusted Computing Group (Just look at the url and you’ll notice it uses SSL, makes you feel secure, doesn’t it?) This project is quite scary if you look at Microsoft’s history of abusing its power and how much potential this project gives them to abuse it. The driving factor of the home computer is entertainment. They know it, we all know it. And if any open source company wants to survive on the desktop -- and with some DRM schemes -- on the server as well, now is the time to challenge Microsoft’s claim on this territory. It took the industry a while before they finally accepted VHS as a viable means to make money, and it will take them just as long again. The clock is ticking.

Look, they’re all bouncy! Ctrl+click is the magnet and normal click is the inverted magnet.
Ok, so maybe I spent a day doing utterly useless code... but at least it’s bouncy. Saturday, December 11. 2004Fancy New Style
I was bored and twiddled with some CSS. Came up with this. Let me know if you like it or not.
If I get less nays than yays, I will switch it permanently. I like it better, so that’s one ‘yay’. Friday, December 10. 2004So you want to marry a canadian eh?

Friday, December 10. 2004Christmas music gone horribly wrong
I was bored today and downloaded some random music, including this choice cut from Popsicle. You’ve gotta hear it, it’s the weirdest amalgam of Christmas standbys with crazy black man lyrics (try and listen to them, EQ if you have to) ever. How this guy’s record company ever decided it would be a good idea to press this is beyond me. But, without further ado:
Popsicle - Bashment Christmas - Low quality (~73kbps, 1.9MB) Popsicle - Bashment Christmas - High quality (~233kbps, 6.1MB) I think maybe we should keep a thread going here where people can link to their choice funny Christmas music. Comment here with a link, or get in touch with me if you want to host a file here. Thursday, December 9. 2004Linux-based Palms on the way
Linux-based Palms on the way
Chinese purchase allows PalmOne to offer a Linux version. By Ephraim Schwartz, InfoWorld Future Palm devices may run Linux, thanks to a surprise purchase by PalmSource. The company, which makes the operating software for the PalmOne devices (notably the Treo smartphones), intends to buy China MobileSoft (CMS), in order to get the know-how for a Linux-based version of the Palm environment. PalmSource said it will “issue approximately 1,570,000 shares of PalmSource common stock in exchange for the outstanding equity and rights to acquire equity in CMS.” As well as mobile Linux, the acquisition will give PalmSource a large footprint in the growing Chinese market for mobile devices and content, according to David Nagel, president and CEO of PalmSource. PalmSource will re-create the PalmSource user interface, software development frameworks based on the Palm OS and BeOS, and applications on top of an open distribution of the Linux kernel, according to Michael Mace, chief competitive officer at PalmSource. The applications will run in a proprietary software layer above the OS. CMS will contribute a version of Linux for mobile devices, Mace confirmed. “We intend that our layer will be portable to other implementations of Linux,” he said. The Linux-based OS will not replace the current Cobalt or Garnet operating systems used by PalmSource today. In addition to opening up markets like China that are increasingly Linux-friendly, however, the open source OS offers a number of other advantages to PalmSource, according to Mace. As PalmSource pushes its products globally, Linux will give the company a huge base of developers. There are already thousands of device drivers available for Linux. “Most companies do their initial testing of new hardware components on Linux first. So if we offer a Linux-compatible version of the OS, it should be easier for licensees to adopt components because testing has been done,” Mace said. Application compatibility between the two operating systems is being addressed by a set of APIs known as Protein. If a developer writes to the Protein APIs, an application will run on both Cobalt and a future Linux OS. If a developer wants to write to the older 68000 processor devices, PalmSource will offer an emulation layer similar to the one used now to run older applications on the Cobalt- and Garnet-based mobile devices. Mace said PalmSource could not say when licensees will ship products with the PalmSource Linux OS. Wednesday, December 8. 2004So You Want To Be Canadian Eh?
